Bhutan is known not only for amazing cultural tours, it also has numerous trekking trails which offer some great trekking experiences in the Himalaya with spectacular mountain landscapes. Mt Jhomolhari Trek is one of the most popular treks in Bhutan which is known for delightful trekking experience in one of the unspoiled Himalayan regions. It’s moderately challenging trek as it crosses over some high passes offering spectacular view of Mt Jhomolhari (7326m), Jichu Drake (6900m) and more. Passing through Dzongs, beautiful village, scattered hamlets, farmland and pasture lands, you will enjoy and only admire the varied landscapes throughout the trip.
The trek is accompanied by city tours before and after the trek which makes it a complete package that Bhutan has to offer.
Outline Itinerary
Day 01: Arrival in Paro, pick up and transfer to hotel.
Day 02: Day hike to Taktsang Monastery , 2800m
Day 03: Drive to Drugyel Dzong and Trek to Shana Dzong (2800m), 5-6 hours
Day 04: Trek from Shana Dzong to Soi Thanthangkha (3800m), 7-8 hours
Day 05: Trek from Soi Thanthangkha to Jangothang (4050m), 4-5 hours.
Day 06: Rest and exploration day at Jangothang
Day 07: Trek from Jangothang to Lingshi (4100m), 6-7 hours
Day 08: Trek from Lingshi to Shodu (3750m), 7-8 hours
Day 09: Trek from Shodu to Barshong Dzong (3500m), 5-6 hours
Day 10: Trek from Barshong to Dodina, 7-8 hours and drive to Thimphu, approx 1.5 hours
Day 11: Sightseeing in Thimphu and drive back to Paro
Day 12: Departure day
Day 01: Arrival in Paro, pick up and transfer to hotel.
The flight to Paro offers you beautiful view of the Himalayan ranges. With clear weather you will enjoy the majestic views Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga along with many more mountains. Upon arrival you will be greeted and received by our representative and drive to Hotel. Afternoon / evening time at leisure. Overnight Hotel.
Day 02: Day hike to Taktsang Monastery , 2800m
Day hike of approx 2-3 hours to Taktsang monastery (Tiger’s nest monastery) through pine forest is a magnificent experience and a decent warm-up for the trek. The monastery which clings to a huge granite cliff 800 meters from the Paro valley is believed to be the spiritual retreat of the great master Guru Padmasambhava where he came in the 7th century on a flying tigress and meditated in a cave for 3 months. The demons were subdued who were trying to stop the spread of Buddhism and converted the Paro valley into Buddhism.
Day 03: Drive to Drugyel Dzong and Trek to Shana Dzong (2800m), 5-6 hours
The day starts with a drive to Drugyel Dzong, the trekking starting point. The trail gradually goes upstream of the Pachu river through beautifull villages ascending to reach Shana camp at 2800m.
Day 04: Trek from Shana Dzong to Soi Thanthangkha (3800m), 7-8 hours
The trail further follows the Pachu river ascending through pine, oak and spruce forest. Lunch will be served near a wooden bridge. The camp at Soi Thanthangkha is at an altitude of 3800m near a stone shelter.
Day 05: Trek from Soi Thanthangkha to Jangothang (4050m), 4-5 hours.
Climb gently for a while to reach an army camp. Then follow the river to enter above tree line with stunning views of mesmerizing peaks around. You will come across several Yak herders’ camp and you will have your lunch today in one of them. An easy walk will take you to Jangothang at an altitude of 4050m. The view of Jhomolhari (7320m) and Jichu Drake (6900m) appear alluring. Both of the mountains are virgin peaks for their yet unclimbed status.
Day 06: Rest and exploration day at Jangothang
A beautiful day for explore and revel in the glorious beauty of the nature at Jangothang . Visit the surrounding areas like Tshophu lake, Yak herders or simply relax.
Day 07: Trek from Jangothang to Lingshi (4100m), 6-7 hours
Following the stream for about half hour and crossing the bridge to the right side the trail climbs up the ridge. The views of Chomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshrim Khang mountains are simple majestic. Walking through the wide open valley and possibly coming across the herds of blue sheep, climb up to the Nyele La pass at 4700m. You won’t find the climb and the pass that difficult as the view is breathtaking. From the pass descend gradually down through the valley with beautiful views on all side. The beautiful Lingshi Dzong perched on top of a hill with commanding view of the valley appear closer. Arrive at camp at 4100 meters near a stone shelter.
Day 08: Trek from Lingshi to Shodu (3750m), 7-8 hours
Today is the most difficult day but one of the highlight and most rewarding days. Opposite of the dzong the trail goes through the valley followed by a stiff climb to Yale la pass at 4950m, the highest point of the trip. The panoramic view of Mt.Chomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshrim Gang will pay off for the hard work. After the pass it’s a long descent to the Shodu camp at 3750m.
Day 09: Trek from Shodu to Barshong Dzong (3500m), 5-6 hours
The path today follows the Thimchu river descending through rhododendron, Juniper and pine forests. The trail gradually ascends for 3-4 hours to the ruins of Barshong Dzong finally reaching the camp at 3500 meters.
Day 10: Trek from Barshong to Dodina, 7-8 hours and drive to Thimphu, approx 1.5 hours
Descending downhill for a while the trail joins the Thimchu river and gradually ascends then again descends through thick bamboo and pine forests to reach Dolemkencho. The trail from here descends all the way to Dodina. End of the trek. Drive back to Thimphu.
Overnight at Hotel.
Day 11: Sightseeing in Thimphu and drive back to Paro.
Exploration and sightseeing in Thimphu. In the afternoon drive to Paro.
Day 12: Departure day
As per the flight schedule, transfer to airport and fly back to onward destination
