Mount Kailash is located in the Kailash mountain range of the Trans-Himalayas. For Hindus, Buddhists, Bonpo and Jains alike it is the most sacred mountain in the world, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year to circumambulate the holy mountain by foot in the belief that it brings good fortune.
Starting in Kathmandu this tour will take you on a magical journey trekking across the Tibetan Plateau where you will pass through the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, green valleys, herds of yaks, meadows, pine forests, waterfalls to arrive at the Holy Lake Manasovara and finally Mount Kailash where your 3-day pilgrimage begins. The tour will finish in Lhasa, the city of wonders.
DAY 1: KATHMANDU (1,400m)
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu and be met by a representative of Getaway! Himalayan Eco Trekking. Transfer to hotel. Dinner and night in hotel.
DAY 2: KATHMANDU
Morning sightseeing around Kathmandu. Afternoon tour briefing. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
DAY 3: KATHMANDU – NEPALGUNJ (165m) (515 km)
Morning transfer to Kathmandu Airport for the 55-minute flight to Nepalgunj. Overnight at hotel in Nepalgunj.
DAY 4: NEPALGUNJ – SIMIKOT (2,910m) – DHARA POKHARI (2,300m)
Morning transfer to Nepalgunj Airport for the 50-minute flight to Simikot. After meeting the trekking team at Simikot you begin the trek climbing up from the airstrip onto a rocky trail. Above the town of Simikot you ascend a forest ridge before making the long and step descent past Dandaphoya to the scattered village of Dhara Pokhari. Camping overnight at Dhara Pokhari.
DAY 5: DHARA POKHARI – SALLIKHOLA (2,700m)
Trek from Dhara Pokhari to SalliKhola. The trek will take you along the river to the waterfall at Chachera then on to a ridge over the village of Kermi before passing through a picturesque valley and pine forest. From there you will descent to the SalliKhola. Overnight camping by the river.
DAY 6: SALLIKHOLA – MUCHU
Trek from Sallikhola to Muchu. The trek will take you across the river and up over a rocky crest before descending to the banks of the Humla Karnali. Crossing another ridge takes you into a beautiful sandy meadow and several more ridges as the valley narrows passing the villages of Yalbang and Yangar. The day ends as the trail winds its way above the river and crosses a suspension bridge to the village of Muchu. Overnight in Muchu.
DAY 7: MUCHU
Free day to rest, acclimatize and explore the village and local area.
DAY 8: MUCHU – SIPSIP (4,330m)
Trek from Muchu to Sipsip. The trail takes you over a ridge to the Tumkot Khola. From there you walk along the streambed before climbing steeply up through a rock-filled gully. You will head towards the small settlement of Yari passing through Palbang and its bright yellow mustard fields. From here the route climbs up the valley and heads towards the Nara Lagna pass. Overnight camping in Sipsip meadow.
DAY 9: SIPSIP – HILSA (3,720m)
Trek from Sipsip to Hilsa. Out of Sipsip the trail ascends steeply to a rocky cairn marking the Nara Lagna pass (4,580m). As you descend down to the village of Ranipauwa you will have stunning panoramic views of the Tibetan Plateau. From Ranipauwa you will follow the trail down to the banks of the Humla Karnali.
DAY 10: HILSA – TAKLAKOT (3,930m)
Trek from Hilsa to where?? After crossing the Nepal-Tibet border (marked only by a stone pillar) you will be met by your driver who will take you to Taklakot via KhojarNath where you can view the Temple of Rama, Sita and Laxman. Overnight in Taklakot.
DAY 11: TAKLAKOT
Free day for rest and acclimatization.
DAY 12: TAKLAKOT – LAKE MANASAROVARA (4,558m) (50km)
2-3 hour drive from Taklakot to the Holy Lake Manasarovara – the highest freshwater lake in the world. The lake is surrounded by Mount Kailash, Mount Gurula-Mandala and Lake Rashekshi. Overnight in Chu Gumba at guesthouse.
DAY 13: LAKE MANASAROVAR – DARCHEN (4,600m) (40km)
Morning puja and dip in Holy Lake Manasarovar. Afternoon drive (1.5 hours) to Darchen, the base of Mount Kailash.
DAY 14: FIRST DAY OF PARIKARMA, DARCHEN – DERAPUK (5,000m)
Drive to Tarboche, the auspicious gateway and first prostration point, via Yama Dwar. Your Parikarma will begin here accompanied by yaks and guides. The 15km trail takes almost 7 hours to walk around the North face of Mount Kailash. Overnight camping in Derapuk.
DAY 15: SECOND DAY OF PARIKARMA, DERAPUK – ZHUTHULPHUK
4-5 hour uphill trek to the highest point, Dolma-La Pass (5,636m) before descending gradually for 4-5 hours to Zuthulphuk. Overnight camping in Zuthulphuk.
DAY 16: THIRD DAY OF PARIKARMA, ZHUTHULPHUK – MANASAROVAR
Final day of your Parikarma and a 3 hour walk to the collection point from where you will be driven to Manasarovar. Overnight camping at Lake Manasarovar.
DAY 17: LAKE MANASAROVAR – PARYANG (4,700m) (227km)
7-8 hour drive to Paryang – the world’s highest town. Overnight in Paryang at guesthouse.
DAY 18: PARYANG – SAGA (4,640m) (230km)
7-8 hour drive to Saga. Overnight in guesthouse.
DAY 19: SAGA – TINGRI (4,348m)
6-7 hour drive to Tingri. Overnight at guesthouse in Tingri.
DAY 20: TINGRI – RONGBOK (4,980m) (90km)
3 hour drive to Rongbok. Overnight at guesthouse in Rongbok.
DAY 21: RONGBOK – LHATSE (4,050m)
hour drive to Lhatse. Overnight at guesthouse in Lhatse.
DAY 22: LHATSE – SHIGATSE (3,800m) (150km)
5 hour drive drive to Shigatse. Overnight at guesthouse in Shigatse.
DAY 23: SHIGATSE – GYANTSE (3,977m) (94km)
3 hour drive to Gyantse. Overnight at guesthouse in Gyantse.
DAY 24: GYANTSE – LHASA (3,650m) (250km)
8 hour drive to Lhasa. Overnight in hotel.
DAY 25: LHASA
Day of sightseeing in Lhasa.
DAY 27: LHASA – KATHMANDU (1,400m)
Transfer from hotel to Lhasa Gonggar International Airport for return journey to Kathmandu.
